History

Before you can be a good navigator, you have to know the waters.

Seaport Credit Union was incorporated in 1926 by the French Canadian founders of St. Anne’s and St. Joseph’s parishes in Salem, Massachusetts. Back then, we were known by our former name—St Joseph Credit Union—and we were called that for 79 years. First deposits for the credit union were accepted at the office of Dr. J.H. Chouinard at the corner of Lafayette and Harbor Streets in Salem. (As a state-chartered community credit union, the sphere of operations includes all who work or reside in Essex County.)

Five years after we incorporated, we were so successful we needed to expand to the first floor of a newly constructed building on Lafayette Street. We continued to grow and in 1952 the main office of the credit union was built at 3 Harbor Street. Within one year of the main office construction, the credit union saw its assets grow from $600,000.00 to $1 million. Steady growth continued for the next 34 years.

In 1986, the former Naumkeag Trust Company building on Lafayette Street was acquired as a branch office and in April of 2005, the credit union changed its corporate name to Seaport Credit Union. Steady growth continued and in 2011, Seaport Credit Union further refined its name to Salem Seaport Credit Union, renewing our commitment to our community and freshening our brand. We now have nearly $60,000,000.00 in assets, maintain a strong capital ratio and support more than 5,000 members. Salem Seaport Credit Union is committed to providing our members with cutting-edge service, which includes providing free Online Banking, free Bill Pay, and free eStatements.

Salem Seaport Credit Union's philosophy has always been to offer the most advanced technologies, systems and access for members without the burden of excess fees.
